Studienkolleg T-Kurs vs M-Kurs: Which One Do You Need?

If you already know you need a Studienkolleg, the next decision is which course: T-Kurs or M-Kurs. This is decided by your intended field of study, not by how strong your math is — so "which one is easier" is the wrong question to start with.

T-Kurs: technical and engineering fields

T-Kurs prepares you for technical, engineering, and mathematics-heavy programs. Its math syllabus is the fuller one: numbers, terms and equations, functions, sequences and series, trigonometry, geometry, differential calculus, integral calculus, vectors and analytic geometry, statistics and probability, and — at some Kollegs — complex numbers.

M-Kurs: medicine and biology fields

M-Kurs prepares you for medicine, biology, and related life-science programs. Its math syllabus overlaps heavily with T-Kurs but drops roughly the hardest 20% — typically no vectors, no analytic geometry, and lighter integral calculus — while adding statistics and probability, which matters more for medical/biological data interpretation than for engineering.

The real deciding factor

Pick based on your intended Bachelor's program, not your comfort with math:

• Going into mechanical, electrical, civil engineering, computer science, or physics? T-Kurs.
• Going into medicine, biology, pharmacy, or a related life science? M-Kurs.

If you're genuinely unsure which field you'll pursue, T-Kurs is the safer default — its broader math syllabus keeps more Bachelor's programs open, since M-Kurs's narrower syllabus can leave gaps for programs that expect the topics it skips.

Both share the same German requirement

Both tracks are tested on German via the C-Test format (and, depending on the Studienkolleg, grammar, reading, or listening components too) — the math syllabus is what differs, not the language bar.

Where the exam is centralised vs per-Kolleg

Topic areas are broadly consistent, but difficulty and emphasis vary by institution. Bayern and Hessen each run one centralised, state-wide Aufnahmeprüfung; every other Studienkolleg writes its own. If your target Kolleg is outside those two states, get its specific past papers rather than relying on the generic syllabus alone.
